The Slovak Information Service functions on the basis of an integrated model of an intelligence service, that is, it carries out tasks both in the area of internal (domestic) and external (foreign) intelligence. The Service is headed by its Director General, who also represents it in public. The Director General of the Service is appointed by the President of the Slovak Republic on the government's proposal. The SIS Director General submits a report on fulfilling the Service's objectives to the National Council of the Slovak Republic at least once a year. |

The issues regarding appointment and dismissal of the director of the Service, his statute and tasks are defined by the Slovak Information Service Act, for instance in
Paragraphs 3, 4, 5,
Paragraphs 11 Section 5,
Paragraphs 16 and
Paragraphs17 Section 6. Similarly to ministries or other central bodies of the state administration, the Slovak Information Service is divided into sections/departments according to the type of activities. Each section/department is headed by a section/department director who is responsible for his/her overall performance to the director of the Service. Details on the organization and management of the Slovak Information Service are defined in the Slovak Information Service's Statute which, in accordance with Paragraph 3, Section 4 of the Slovak Information Service Act, is approved by the Slovak government, as well as in the Organizational Order of the Slovak Information Service based on the above-mentioned Statute. Both documents include classified information, and they are protected in compliance with the regulations on the protection of the classified information. |

The tasks of the Slovak Information Service are carried out by its members, that is, citizens in the state service (in compliance with the Act 73/1998 Coll. on the State Service of the Officers of the Police Corps, Slovak Information Service, Prison Guard Corps and Railway Police as amended). They are employed within all the sections of SIS. The Service's premises are serviced by civilian employees of the Service (they are employed under standard conditions). Under the law an officer of the Slovak Information Service, while carrying out his/her tasks, is required to safeguard the honour, esteem, and dignity of other people, as well as of his/her own, so that no harm or loss shall occur to any persons in connection with his/her activities. The Slovak Information Service employs Slovak citizens from every region of the country. Their race, nationality or religion are not relevant. What matters is their compliance with the qualification requirements and other requirements defined by the law.
